It was a cold morning with a chilly breeze for the Chichester Priory 10K on Sunday 5th February. The event was relocated this year from its traditional home in Chichester to the Goodwood motor racing circuit. There was a good turn out of club members, despite some CWTC regulars missing the event to focus on their long-course training or to recover from illness/injury.
The organisers have some work to do for next year to avoid a repeat of the traffic problems ahead of the race. With traffic backing up as far as Homebase to the south and presumably similar to the north, the race start was delayed by 30 minutes to allow everyone to get to the event and to clear the road we were all about to run down. I'm sure I wasn't the only one to have several warm-ups in an attempt to keep warm and be ready for eventual start.
Once the traffic was clear, the runners were assembled inside the motor circuit and then walked down to the start line on the road. The first 6km took us on a loop around local roads (all traffic managed), with the final 4km being a lap of the motor circuit. Conditions were good for running, apart from the inevitable headwind round the back of the motor circuit, and the course was well marshalled. With spectators restricted to the pits area there was a good atmosphere at the finish, but it would have been nice to have some support for those last 4km!
Most of the runners I spoke to after the event had enjoyed the run and liked the new course. The traffic and delayed start marred it for many though, so let's hope that can be resolved for next year. If you enter in 2018, consider cycling to the event as part of your structured warm up!
