This was one of the wettest and boggiest running of the event to date according to the organisers and it certainly felt like it. The Beast is a ‘double or quit’ cross country race of appx either 5 or 10 miles, depending if you have had enough of the mud, hills, water, ditches, jumps and more water or not after one lap. Horses usually tackle the course but even they weren’t daft enough to try it on such a grim day. I did though, along with 198 folks who had given their all after one lap and another 171 who trudged around for a second time.
1:15:14 after the starting hooter, I crossed the finish line in 18th place for the ‘double’, which I was quite happy with. It was hard not to enjoy the race in spite of the conditions; who doesn’t enjoy getting muddy, jumping in puddles and climbing over obstacles?
The event wasn’t quite over though as the car park was a quagmire and everyone pitched in to push their fellow Beasted comrades’ cars back to solid ground. Misery loves company, but so does it bring out the best in folks and everyone was still smiling, even after all of that. Same time next year? Probably!
