Swimming subs increase

May 25th, 2010

The prices for hiring the swimming lanes are going up, and as a result we need to raise our subs to cover the increase.
The committee met last week and discussed many options to ensure that we kept solvent and the following was decided:
Tuesdays will now be £3
Thursdays will now be £2

The pool is closed on Tuesday the 8th June, so these rises will come into effect on the THURSDAY 10TH JUNE. Aidy will send out other reminders, but please help the club by making sure that you come with the money as it is both awkward to chase and the club is not in a position to subsidise the lanes any more than it has.
We hope that you understand the increase and continue to come and enjoy the swimming.

Eton Supersprint Triathlon

May 18th, 2010

Four members of the Club took part in the Eton Supersprint triathlons at the weekend, Andy Roberson raced on Saturday and Chandra Morton, Diana Littler and Phil Poyner raced on Sunday. The main reason for doing this one was the open water swim in Dorney Lake. It was a 400m swim, 20.5km bike and 5km run.

Saturday apparently was nice and warm, Andy reckons he had his sun cream on whilst he was bombing round the bike route getting a healthy tan and a brilliant result. He completed the tri in 1 hour and 26 seconds (curse those seconds!!) coming 2nd in his age group and 14th overall. Well done Andy – watch out Mike!

Sunday was cold and wet and windy, the lake was freezing and none of us could feel our hands and feet by the time the swim started. Diana and Phil both did really well on the swim, Chan however clearly needs more practice with sighting the buoys – you’re supposed to swim round them not avoid them like the plague by aiming for the other side of the lake. Phil needs a little practice getting his wetsuit off quickly (baby oil Phil) and could save at least a minute in transition if he didn’t insist on putting his socks on (he reckons he needs new shoes)!

The heavens opened on the bike ride, the route was wet and slippery and we couldn’t think of anywhere we would rather be, it stopped in time for the run though, whether it was that that lifted us or the fact that it was nearly over, who knows?

Chan completed it in 1hr 14 mins (10th out of 96 entered in category), Diana in 1hr 17 mins (15 / 96) and Phil in 1hr 20 mins (22 / 61) – we don’t worry about seconds Andy!!

Overall for a first open water swim tri it is a really good event and the great thing is there were people of all shapes and sizes and all abilities.

Salisbury Fast Twitch

May 17th, 2010

There were 10 CWTC members at this years Salisbury Fast Twitch Triathlon. The rain that the weatherman had forecast arrived early and persisted throughout the race. 400m in the pool was followed by 30km of rain and wind on the bike. Temperatures struggled to lift above single figures and all the triathletes still chose to wear just a tri suit. This didn’t stop some fast bike splits with Tom over a minute clear of Dan. The bike course went passed the historic Stonehenge which looked cold and bleak with the grey sky and spray from the road.

So the rain kept falling as the bike leg came to a welcome close. The run was mostly pavement with a little surprise cross country section complete with stile to jump over. On the approach to the finish it became clear the run had a little further to go than first appeared, with one lap of the running track to go before finally ending.

The weather cleared for long enough for everyone to gather outside for the prize giving. Concept Sports struggled with their new timing system and this made for an amusing results presentation. CWTC members picked up 6 prizes. Tom 5th man, Dan 1st <20, Mike 2nd M40-44, Jase 1st M25-29, Mary 2nd F35-39 and Persephone 1st F45-49.
